2in1 Music Night: Juracoustic #8 + Punk show!!!

October 27, 2009

Hello everyone.

This Thursday’s (29th Oct) Juracoustic is merging with the Limited Express (Has Gone?) + Ni Hao! (2 bands from Japan!) show that was meant to be taking place at Dirty Shirlows.

That means there’ll be Juracoustic downstairs and punk bands upstairs!

It will start at the usual time of 7pm. We gotta fit in about 7 bands/artists (possibly more?) in about two and a half hours so come early!

If you want to go upstairs for the bands, we’re asking for $10 entry (it costs a lot of money to come from Japan) but if you’re only coming for Juracoustic the usual $5 donation will be very very much appreciated.

So.. playing the downstairs Juracoustic couch will be:

A Dire Dawn
di drew all sad all acoustic all of the time. it’s her last night living in sydney & she’s going out with a whimper i promise

New Caledonian Blue
Elliott Smith shakes hands with the Chicago blues; hands made, mostly, of violin strings.

Let the Concrete Crumble
newest acoustic guise of the worldly Novacastrian haiku master Mark Whittaker

Playing the Fanya Baron Library will be:

Limited Express (Has Gone?) (Japan)

Ni-Hao! (Japan)

To the North (Brisbane)

Hira Hira

The night will take a form sort of like: band upstairs, acoustic downstairs, band upstairs, acoustic downstairs, etc etc. While bands are playing upstairs, feel free to make as much music noise as you want downstairs. Singalongs, open mic, all that usual stuff.

There should also be food available by donation as usual as well.

Thanks. Hope to see you there!

Juracoustic #07

September 7, 2009

Thursday 24 September @ 7pm
Jura Books (440 Parramatta Rd, Petersham)
$5/donation

Stono Caves, will once again remind us that a lack of technical ability is no excuse for a lack of self expression, reaching for hope while fighting off capitalism and failed relationships, and using humour to unsettle Islamophobes, all at the same time.

Jess Dunbar, a folk inspired songwriter whose soulful voice and music is reminiscent of summer nights at the beach.

Olivia Clark, who is part of the Bankstown Talent Advancement Program, will play her whimsical songs with fantastical lyrics inspired by musicians such as Nick Drake and Fleet Foxes.

There will also be the usual singalongs and hopefully plenty of space for whoever else wants to come along and play some songs or do some spoken word. Oh, and of course there’s vegetarian food and drinks by donation and the chance to buy some entries in our raffle.

Raffle to Save Jura

August 24, 2009

Jura Books is facing a crisis and an opportunity. Last year the bank that holds the mortgage for our property called in the loan. They asked us to pay $5,000 immediately and the rest – another $15,000 – as soon as possible. With the help of the Jura community, we managed to raise enough money to make that first payment of $5,000. But we still owe $15,000.

Jura is one of the few activist organisations in Sydney that owns its own property. This is an amazing achievement, built through the effort of members, supporters and friends over the last 31 years. The building is a stable resource for the broader progressive community, and in it we can prefigure real alternatives to the present society. We don’t want to lose our building.

We need your help to raise the remaining $15,000 – please buy some raffle tickets!

Jura is a not-for-profit community bookshop, library and organising space. We stock thousands of books that you won’t find anywhere else – anarchist, enviro, feminist, libertarian socialist, vegan, street art, history, fiction and more. We try to make these available to the community for the lowest possible price in order to build social justice and a better world. We also host community events – everything from gigs, poetry nights, and films to political talks and fundraisers for activist causes. Many different groups use our space, and we also maintain a library and archive of political poster art. We’re all volunteers.

To find out about prizes and how to buy tickets visit the Jura Website.

Hello!

July 31, 2009

Look, we’re now on the internet!

Firstly, thank you to everyone who has come to one of our events so far. If you haven’t come to any you can check out the ‘History’ page and find out what you’ve missed out on. The links to other pages are on the right hand side of this page.

If you need an explanation for what this is all about then go to the ‘About’ page. I hope it will provide an adequate and satisfying explanation. If it doesn’t, well we have an email. It’s juracoustic[at]gmail[dot]com.

On the right you’ll also see a list of upcoming events. If you would like to perform at any of them dates you should let us know sooner rather than later.

Thanks, bye!
